My Visit to Beth Messiah
The mood in the sanctuary was very relaxed and friendly. The service “Shabbath” started as you might expect with a prayer. Partially in English and partially in Hebrew. A small group of 5 singers and 1 guitar player makes up the worship team that leads the congregation in song. Mostly folk style music, very pleasant to hear filled with lyrics that glorify God and uplift the soul.
They do have quite a bit of liturgy and routine in the service, but I believe that it is all designed to resemble or emulate what one would expect at a synagoge. One of the things that impressed me was the extremely large scroll “Torah” that is kept behind the lectern in a cabinet. When the scroll is brought out it signifies a very sacred part of the service. It is carried around through the congregation for all to see and if you like to touch.
If you are interested in sound biblical teaching the Rabbi does not disappoint. In fact I feel that the traditional Jewish perspective on biblical doctrine is very enlightening on certain subjects such as the feast and the offerings. The Sermon today was concerning the peace offering or “Thanksgiving Offering”. You can probably download the whole sermon from their website so I will not make any comments except to say that I came away with new perspectives about worship and thanksgiving. I can also say that I enjoyed the sermon.
They have a fellowship meal after each “Shabbath” or Saturday service. I was told that they do this to enhance fellowship between members in the church.
